Only Recently I bought a lot of 'junk' for not too much. Though it took me ages to clean
them, by chance I noted that some 'smallies' seem to have been recut for use. The original
coins have at a certain stage been (re)cut into sometimes much smaller 'new' coins. But
funnily enough still identifiable for the coin user of that day. Copper shortage ? Transport
breakdowns ? A late Roman or then maybe new Barbarian twisted sense of humour ? Who shall
say ...
Susan Headley kindly told me via e-mail "Regarding the clipped bronzes at the bottom of the page, this is true, that people actually clipped them in the very late Imperial period because metal got so scarce that even bronze was worth clipping, and coins as small as 2mm circulated! Another variety of this type that is found in uncleaned coins a lot is the "minimissima" which is where a coin the size of, say, AE2 was cut into thirds or fourths, so each small bit has a portion of the entire coin. The edges are always rounded, so I guess whatever metal was lost in the clipping into 4ths and then rounded was collected by the mints for the Emperor's use." Thank you Susan ! |
