Arcadius (383-408 ad) was born in 377. Proclaimed Augustus by his father on the 19th January 383. After the death of Theodosius I, Arcadius inherited the Orient. He was a weak emperor however and left ‘all the fun’ to his wife Empress Eudoxia who did rule, and with an iron hand. When she died in 404 power moved to the beneficient Praetorian Prefect Anthemius. Military power was in the hands of Gaïnas, a Goth. Arcadius died in 408, aged but 30.
