This piece was minted during the reign of Tiberius AD 22 - 30 or AD 31 - 37 in remembrance of Augustus (who ruled from 27 BC to AD 14). Augustus was the declared heir of Julius Caesar. After unifying the Roman world by his defeat of Anthony and Cleopatra, he was acclaimed by the Senate as Augustus (the revered) marking the formal end of the old republic and the establishment of the empire. The longevity of his reign made him a demi-god in the eyes of many.
