Constantinus II
Flavius Claudius Constantinus
(AD 272 or 285 - 317 (caesar) - 337 - 340)

Constantinus II Providentiae Ceasares
1. Front 2. Back
Silvered Bronze AE3 Follis - Æ 17-19 mm - 4 grams - Die axis 11:00 - RIC VII (Nicomedia) 36 - Struck AD 317-320.
1. 1. [FL] CL CONSTANTINVS NOB C (Flavius Claudius Constantinus Nobilitas Caesar - F.C.C. the most noble Caesar). Smallish bust of the caesar, draped, facing right. Uncertain if crowned.
2. PROVI[DEN]-tIAE CAESS (Providentiae Ceasares - Providence of the Caesars).
Jupiter standing facing left bent slightly backwards and with slightly bent legs. Holding sceptre with left arm and Victory on Globe in his right (the punch hole is there now). Palmleaf at left of his feet. At his right there is a 'B' under a dot. The 'B' standing for the second officina.
2.b ‘SMN’: SM = Sacra Moneta (Imperial Money), N = Nicomedia (Izmet, Turkey).
This coin appeared after the same series with 'IOVI CONSERVATORI CAESS'. Now 'PROVIDENTIAE' is on top. The palm leaf is not a standard addition to Iovi and a sort of mintmark. The issue before this one had an asterisk instead of the dot or just nothing.
Iovi certainly seems to be staggering from Christian punches, by the way ...

Minted in Nicomedia

Obv. : Worn, rests of silvering - Rev. : Good but worn

Large punch hole at 09: through coin - Rests of silvering - Quite thick
