Philippus I Arabs
Marcus Julius Phillippus
(AD 204 - 244 - 249)

Philippus I 'Arabs' Aequitas Augustii
1. Front 2. Back
Silver Denarius - Æ 19-21 mm - 3 grams - Die axis 12:00 - RIC26(b) - Struck AD 247-249.
1. [IM]P M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG (Imperator Marcus Julius Phillippus Augustus).
Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of bearded emperor facing right.
2. AEQVITAS AVGG (Aequitas Augustii - (Financial) Justice of the Augustii).
Aequitas in Stola standing full front, facing left, holding scales in her right arm and Cornucopia with left.
Though broken it remains a 'nice' coin. Though I don't know if you can say that of someone who murdered a begging youngster (agreed, times were different then).
The second G in AVGG is his son Marcus Julius Phillippus ('son of' i.e. JR). Though Sonnie became Augustus in 247 ad and was helped into the afterlife in battle at the same time as his father in september or october 249 ad, this coin in fact refers to him already being a caesar.

Minted in Rome.

Obv. : Good - Rev. : Good - Broken in 3 parts - AVGG is Ph I & Ph II.
