Bronze Dupondius - Æ 26 mm - 10 grams - Die axis 12:00 - Probably RIC 94 - Struck AD 41-50.
1. [TI CLAVDIVSCAES]AR AVG PM TRP IMP (Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Pontifex Maximus Tribunicia Potestas - T.C. Caesar Augustus, Supreme Priest, Holder of the Tribunician Power). Bust of emperor facing left.
2. [CERES] - AVGVSTA (Ceres Augusta - Ceres the Supreme).
Ceres, veiled and in Stola, seated facing left on the right side of the coin on an ornamental throne. In outstretched right arm holding two corn-ears, with left arm holding a long torch.
2.b SC (Senatus Consulto - By decree of the Senate).
This issue was a publicity issue to assure Roman citizens of an ample supply of grain from North Africa and Egypt. According to Suetonius Claudius at first was not so interested in assuring Rome of it's grain until, because of famine, her got pelted at with stones and rotten fruit in the streets !
