Countermarked Countermarked
1. Front 2. Back
Bronze As - Æ 22-24 mm - 6 grams - Die axis unknown.
1. - Legend indiscernible -
Obverse of the coin is worn practically flat but still shows face of emperor facing right. It has two clear countermarks : the first is AV/O and the second TICΣ.
2. - Legend indiscernible -
Reverse of the coin is won totally flat without any recognizable marks.
Probably : AV/O being from Augustus' era. The TIC being from Tiberius'. The Σ in TICΣ again probably stands for the 5th year of reign, making it then year AD 19. Anyway most countermarks are from the Julio-claudian Dynasty era. Theories range from outworn money remade useful by an official stamp to donative money for loyal troops (ps : not all countermarked money was as worn as mine !)
