Constantius Gallus
(AD 351 (caesar) - 354)

'FEL TEMP REPARATIO' Coin 1.a

Constantius Gallus Fel Temp Reparatio
1. Front 2. Back
Bronze Æ 3 - Æ 16-17 mm - 4 grams - Die axis 06:00 - RIC VIII (Constantinople) 120 - Struck AD 351-354.
1. DN FL CL CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES (Dominus Noster Flavus Claudius Constantius Nobilitas Caesar - Our Lord F.C.C the Noble Ceasar). Draped bust of the Caesar, ‘beatle' hair, facing right. Bare headed since he was 'only' caesar.
2. FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO (Felicium Temporum Reparatio - Restoration of Blessed Times).
Well designed roman soldier (cuirassed, helmeted & shield) leaning over while spearing fallen barbarian horseman (at left) seemingly still on his horse. Horse is skeletonish. At the Roman soldier's foot is a sort of scarab which probably stands for the barbarian's shield.
2.b CONSS : CONS = Constantinople, S = digamma = 6th Officina.
Gallus was one of the few who escaped the family massacre initiated by Constantine's sons in order to weed out possible future contestants to the throne. When Constantius II was unable to deal with lesser rebellions out east because more pressing issues required his presence elsewhere, he decided it would be served best if a family member was given the task. So he summoned Gallus, made him Caesar and sent him on his mission. Although he was successful in dealing with the revolts, his methods were found to be so cruel that they would likely spawn new revolts. Word of his heavy-handed manners reached Constantius and he had him recalled. Being led to believe that he was going to be promoted to full Augustus, the happy Gallus arrived at court only to find out he was under arrest. He was then sent to an island, tried and executed.

'FEL TEMP REPARATIO' Coin 1.b

Constantius Gallus Fel Temp Reparatio
1. Front 2. Back
Bronze Æ 3 - Æ 17-18 mm - 4 grams - Die axis 10:00 - RIC VIII (Cyzicus) 107 - Struck AD 351-354.
1. [D]N FL CL CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES (Dominus Noster Flavus Claudius Constantius Nobilitas Caesar - Our Lord F.C.C the Noble Ceasar). Bust of the caesar, ‘beatle' hair, facing right. Bare headed since he was 'only'caesar.
2. FEL TEMP - REPARATIO (Felicium Temporum Reparatio - Restoration of Blessed Times). Well designed Roman soldier (cuirassed, skirted, helmeted, shielded - at right) spearing fallen barbarian horseman (at left) lying backwards over his horse (barely visible). Seems like the barbarian is warding off the blow. At Roman soldier's foot a circle probably being the barbarians shield.
2.b 'SMKΓ' : SM = Sacra Moneta (Imperial Money), K = Cyzicus (Kapu Dagh, Turkey), Γ = 3rd Officina
The Artist of the reverse seems to have been better is drawing than writing. His 'T' is clearly an Γ (making Γemp and ReparaΓio). Furthermore the E in Temp seems reversed and his P is open at the top. His 'R' in Reparatio is more an 'A'. And his whole 'Reparatio' is past the Roman soldiers spear including the 'Re').

Obv. : Quite worn - Rev. : Good but worn -
The M&P have been written with a deep heart (V) for the M and a low D for the P.
