Constantius II
Flavius Claudius Constantius
(AD 317 - 323 (caesar) - 337 - 361)

Constantius II Providentiae Ceasares
1. Front 2. Back
Bronze Æ 3 - Æ 17 -18 mm - 4 grams - Die axis 06:00 - RIC VII (Nicomedia) 124 - Struck AD 325-326.
1. FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C (Flavius Julius Constantius Nobilitas Caesar - F.J.C. the Noble Caesar). Laurelled and cuirassed bust of caesar facing left. A Caesar was by now the 2nd most powerful in the empire, and came just below the Augustus and therefore denoted as ‘nobilitas’.
2. PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS (Providentiae Ceasares - Providence of the Caesars).
(Camp)gate with 2 towers with turrets and a star in the sky in-between. The CAESS points to there being at the time two Caesars (SS).
2.b ‘MNΔ’ (M = Moneta; N = Nicomedia => Izmet, Turkey; 'Δ' = 4th officina). Nicomedia was 'in business' after 294. In fact the exergue legend should in fact have been SM-etc in stead of M but apparently some boss-man didn't find the money holy anymore at this period in time.
