Bronze Æ 3 - Æ 16-18 mm - 3 grams - Die axis 11:00 – RIC VII (Cyzicus) 10 - Struck AD 317-320.
1. DN FL IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES (Dominus Noster Flavius Iulius Crispus Nobilitas Caesar – Our Lord F.J.C. Most Highly Regarded Caesar). Laureate and draped bust of emperor, facing left., holding globe and sceptre in left hand, mappa in right.
2. IOVI CONSER-VATORI CAESS (Iovi Conservatori Caesares – Jupiter Protects Our Caesars).
Jupiter standing, nude, full front facing left, wearing chlamys, leaning on staff in left hand. Upholding with right arm statue of victory presenting him a wreath. Left of Iovi’s feet vaguely a laurel wreath. A Γ at Iovi's right standing for the 3rd Officina.
2.b 'SMK' : SM = Sacra Moneta (Imperial Money) of K = Cyzicus (Kapu Dagh, Turkey).
The wreath is part of the mintmark.
I do not know if it is true, but it is said that if coin designers in those days didn't like you they just gave you a small portrait. Where does that leave Crispus then ? Or maybe this was a christian coin designer/maker resenting having to portrait this 'heathen' Iovi ?
