Domitianus
Titus Flavius Domitianus
(AD 51 - 81 - 96)

Domitianus Fortunae Augusti
1. Front 2. Back
Bronze As - Æ 27 mm - 11 grams - Die axis 11:00.
1. [IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM COS XV (?) CENS PERP PP] (Imperator Caesar Domitianus Augustus Germanicus Consulares XV Censor Perpetuus Pater Patriae - Imperator Caesar D. Augustus, Conqueror of the Germans, 15th time Consul, Perpetual Censor, Father of the Country). Bust of laureate emperor facing right.
2. [FORTVNAE AVGVSTI] (Fortunae Augusti - Augustal Prosperity).
Fortuna, in Stola, full front, facing left. Carrying a Cornucopia in her left arm and holding rudder with her right. At her left and right : SC (Senatus Consulto - By decree of the Senate). The SC is, for this coin type, quite high placed.
This coin was a 'find' in a detector findings lot bought via the 'net. Though the dealer I bought it from is otherwise reputable, this lot clearly contained his junk. This coin was clearly killed in the cleaning process. In reality this coin is slightly more yellowish (orichalcum ?) than shown here. Anyway the emperor in question has a remarkable long neck. It is (thanks Stephen) a Domitianus with on reverse Fortuna, holding a rudder and cornucopia.
Minted in Rome.
