Domitianus
Titus Flavius Domitianus
(AD 51 - 81 - 96)

Domitianus IMP XXII COS XVI CENS PP
1. Front 2. Back
Silver Denarius - Æ 17 mm – 4-5 grams - Die axis 11:00 - RIC 172var - Struck AD AD 91-92.
1. IMP C[AES] DOMIT AV[G GERM] PM TRP XII (Imperator Caesar Domitianus Augustus Germanicus Pontifex Maximus Tribunicia Potestas XII - Imperator Caesar D. Augustus, Conqueror of the Germans, Highest Priest, Holder of the Tribunician Power for the 12th time). Bust of laureate emperor facing right.
2. [IMP XXII] COS XVI CENS PP (Imperator XXII, Consul XVI, Censor, Pater Patriae - Imperator for the 22nd time, Consul for the 16th time, Censor, Father of the Country). Helmeted Minerva, looks like she is in Stola, seen sideways, facing right. Shield in left arm. Spear in right arm, ready for throwing. She stand on a ship. Her owl in front of her.
Domitianus felt a special tie to Minerva. Described by RIC as standing on a prow, but friend Stephen feels more for a statue standing on a rostra (maybe the one at the emperor's palace ?). Minted in Rome.
Has a legend pretty difficult to read. As if the maker couldn't write or something like that.
