Bronze As - Æ 24 mm - 14 grams - Die axis 12:00 - 'Struck' after AD 139.
1. HADRIANVS AVG COS III PP (Hadrianus Augustus Consul Tertius Pater Patriae - H. Augustus Consul 3rd time, Father of the Country). Laureate bust of bearded emperor, facing right.
2. RESTITVTORI GALLIAE (Restitutori Galliae - Restorer of Gallia).
Emperor (left) facing towards a kneeling Gallia (right) who is facing the emperor being raised from its supplicant’s position.
2.b [S]C (Senatus Consulto - By decree of the Senate).
Hadrian was granted the title Pater Patriae in AD 128. A Sestertius of this type (27.79 gm) was Struck AD 136. There is also a ‘RESTITVTOR HISPANIAE’ with the same picture but with a rabbit between them. A ‘RESTITVTOR ACHAEA’ with a vase between them. A ‘ORBIS TERRARVM’ where the kneeling figure is turreted. And a ‘RESTITVTORI BITHYNIAE’ where a towered Bithynia kneels and holds a rudder in her left hand. All are being raised by a togate Hadrian.
