Caracalla
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, born originally as Julius Bassianus
(AD 188 - 195 (caesar) - 198 (co-aug.) 211 - 217)

Carcalla PONTIF TR P VIII COS II
1. Front 2. Back
Bronze Denarius - Æ 17-18 mm - 4 grams - Die axis 06:00 - Struck later than AD 205.
1. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG (Antoninus Pius Augustus - Antoninus, the pious Augustus).
Laureled & toga’d bust of emperor facing right.
2. PONTIF TR P VIII COS II (Pontifex, Tribunicia Potestate VIII, Consulares III - State Priest, Holder of the Tribunician Power for the 8th Time, Consul for the 3rd). Salus (health, prosperity) in Stola seated at right, facing leftwards feeding rising serpent with outstretched arm. The serpent is coiled around an altar at left.
TRP VIII would suggest a minting date of 205. If TRP XVIII it would be 215 but then he would have had GERM (Germanicus) in the obverse legend. Anyway from the portraiture he is not the 'boy king' anymore. This coin was officially struck AD 205 but then this one would probabaly have been struck in the years or decades afterwards. (Since it is not made of silver this has to be an ancient forgery :-( ...).

Obv. : Good - Rev. : Good.
