Probably an ancient imitation of a Septimius Severus denarius, mixing up a shortened legend of RIC 74 (originally: ADVENTVI AVG FELICISSIMO, Severus riding right with right hand raised. On this one, it seems to read [ADVEN]TVI [AVG] with the image of RIC 91 (originally: PROFECTIO AVG, Severus on horse prancing right, holding spear). Both RIC 74 and RIC 91 have L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIII as obverse legend. PERT is readable on the left of the portrait, but hard to see. But then ancient imitations didn't always copy official coins correctly (as seen on the reverse of this coin).
Obv. : No legend to speak of, quality reasonable - Rev. : ibid. |
