Emperor, cuirassed and bearded, facing right, wearing the radiate crown.
2. [INVICTVS] (Invictus - Unconquerable, Invincible).
Sol advancing leftwards, right arm upraised. In his left a whip.
This piece was minted during the reign of Victorinus, who ruled the Gallo-Roman empire from 268-270. A soldier of great ability who succeeded to the throne after the death of Marius.
During his reign there was the secession of Spain and troubles in Gaul which ended in revolt at Augustodumum. Victorinus took the city after a seven months siege. Soon to be murdered by one of his own officers at Cologne.
COIN : The reverse features Sol advancing left, holding whip, sometimes a star in left field. This type of coin refers to the cult of the unconquerable sun, which was in its ascendancy during the reign of Victorinus.
