Julian, brother of Constantius Gallus, was made Caesar by his brother's murderer, Constantius II. Constantius Gallus was possibly executed over mismanagement in the east. Constantius II then assigned him an army and to suppress yet another German invasion. Meeting with succes his soldiers smlet money and claimed him as Augustus. He never had to fight Constantius II in battle since the latter's early death (of an illness).
Reversing the growing momentum of Christianity within the empire, Julian attempted to bring back the old pagan gods and its rituals. Maybe out of personal conviction or out of a need to counter the Constantines legacy (who had decimated his family). He then had to take his army to deal with a new round of Persian invasions. He died in 363 from a javelin wound fighting the these.
