Bronze Follis - Æ 20-21 mm - 4 grams - Die Axis 12:00 - RIC VI (Siscia) 232(a) - Struck after AD 316.
1. IMP LIC LICINIVS PF AVG (Imperator Licinianvs Licinivs Pius Felix (Pious and Blessed) Augustus).
Laureate bust of the bearded emperor facing right.
2. IOVI CONS-ERVATORI AVGG NN (Iovi Conservatori Augustorum Nostrum - Jupiter Protects Our Augustii). Jupiter, nude (with cape ?), standing full front facing left. In right arm upholding winged victory statue turned towards him (with laurel crown in hand). At Jupiter’s foot, left, an eagle with it’s tail towards J. but it’s head turned towards him holding a wreath in it's beak. The Є at the right of the God stands for the 5th officina.
2.b ‘SIS’ (Sis = Siscia = Sisak, Croatia). Siscia was closed in 387.
LICINIUS I was born in Moesia Superior about 250 to peasants. Military friend of Galerius. Named Augustus at Carnuntum in 308. Licinius formed an alliance with Constantine I, which proved fatal to Maximinus II. Licinius then fell out with Constantine, which resulted in two civil wars. The first only resulted in territorial loss. The second, in 324, resulted in his defeat and capture. Executed in spring of 325 on charges of renewed plotting against Constantine.
