Aemilian was born into an obscure family in the Roman province of Africa, was probably married to Cornelia Supera, but other details of his early life are unknown. When (in AD 251), the governor of Moesia Superior (Trebonianus Gallus) was acclaimed emperor, Aemilianus was sent to replace him. Gallus secured the throne but was not popular due to the humiliating treaties signed in 251 with a.o. the Goths.
Aemilian then refused to pay the tribute these in 252/3 which caused the Goths to invade the Roman provinces. He then soundly defeated them early that summer, on which his legions acclaimed him emperor. Aemilian then (had to) march on Rome but Gallus' soldiers, anticipating defeat, assassinated Gallus and his son and declared for Aemilian. Aemilian now had to confront Valerianus on his way southwards from the Rhine Provinces to avenge his former Emperor. But This time, near Spoletium in september 253 Aemilian's troops did not see any profit in fighting and assassinated the man they had elevated.
Provincially minted in Viminacium, Moesia Superior.
