1. Front 2. Back
Bronze Dupondius - Æ 21-22 mm - 7 grams - Die axis 12:00 - AMNG 90 - Struck AD 242-243.
1. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS [FEL A] (Imperator Gordianus Pius Felix (Dutiful and wise) Augustus).
Radiate, draped & cuirassed bust facing right.
2. [PMS C]-OL VIM (Provincia Moesia Superior, Colonia Viminacium - Province of Upper Moesia, City of Viminacium). Moesia, in Chiton, wearing headdress with drapery attached, standing facing, head left, holding hare with right arm and Vexillum with left.
2.b AN IIII (Anno IIII - Year 4 of obtaining colonial status.
The Bull (symbol of Legio VII) and the Lion (symbol for Legio IV) are not depicted here ! This is Viminacium's most interesting type, Moesia holding a Vexillium with left hand (with numbers of both legions) and in left hand holding (the hind legs of) a hare. The type is connected with the Gordian`s sucesses in the war with the Persians. Another theorie is that this representation suggests the “bravery” of the legions (negatively). But then again it could mean that the enemy has run like hares.
Provincially minted in Viminacium, Moesia Superior.
