Hostilianus was a son of Trajan Decius. In AD 251, his older brother Herennius Etruscus
was made Augustus, Hostilianus was made Caesar. When his father and brother were massacred
at Abrittus by the Goths, Decius' leading general Trebonianus Gallus was proclaimed Emperor.
For political reasons Gallus allowed Herennia to retain the title of Augusta and raised the
young Hostilian to the rank of Augustus as his co-ruler. Hostilian's sister was married to
Volusian, the son of Trebonianus. Unfortunately Hostilian died of plague soon afterwards,
Herennia faded into history. Gallus and Volusian were murdered by their own troops in AD 253.
Provincially minted in Viminacium, Moesia Superior.
