Bronze Sestertius - Æ 27-28 mm - 15 grams - Die axis 12:00 - Struck AD 248-249 - AMNG 16, Sear GICV 3873.
1. IMP M IVL P[HIL]IPPVS AVG (Imperator Marcus Julius Philippus Augustus).
Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of bearded emperor facing right.
2. PROV-IN-CIA DACIA (Provincia Dacia - Province of Dacia).
Dacia, standing, full front facing right, in long Chiton and wearing a Phrygian cap. In her right arm holding the standard of the legion V (with its symbol the eagle at that side at her feet). In her left arm the standard of legion XIII (with its symbol the lion at that side at her feet). Unsure if she wears a sword or Logobolon. The word Dacia is slightly compressed.
2.b AN III : Year 3 (Year 3 of obtaining provincial status). AN III is AD 248-249.
From Sear GICV: "In AD 246 Philip achieved a victory over the barbarians who were harassing the Roman province of Dacia. The eagle and the lion were the emblems of Legions V and XIII, which took part in the campaign."
