Probus
Marcus Aurelius Equitius Probus
(AD 232 - 276 - 282)

Probus Pax Augusti
1. Front 2. Back
Bronze Aurelianianus - Æ 21-22 mm - 5 grams - Die axis 12:00 - RIC 713 - Struck at earliest around AD 278.
1. IMP PROBVS PF AVG (Imperator Probus Pius Felix (Pious and Blessed) Augustus).
Helmeted, cuirassed and bearded emperor facing left, spear on far shoulder.
2. PAX A-vGVSTI (Pax Augusti - Augustal Peace).
Pax, crowned, in stola, standing still, holding up trident with right hand and transverse scepter with other. Under her arm at that side probably rests of ceremonial clothing. A "V" at the right of the statue (Stands for the 5th officina).
2.b XXI : probably stands for the coin being silvered to 1/20th of it's weight.
The XXI could be standing for being silvered for 1/20-th of it's weight, a sort of state guarantee. Done for curbing the running inflation. Minted in all probability in Siscia (Sisak, Croatia). Siscia was closed in 387.
