Silver Denarius - Æ18 mm - 4 grams - Die axis 12:00 - RIC 61 - Struck AD 227.
1. IMP C M AVR SEV - ALEXAND AVG (Imperator Caesar Marcus Aurelius Severus Alexander Augustus). Bust of laureate emperor facing right. Possibly lightly bearded.
2. PM TR P VI - COS-III PP (Pontifex Maximus, Tribunicia Potestate VI, Consul Tertius, Pater Patriae - High Priest, Holder of the Tribunician Power 6th time, Consul 3rd time, Father of the Country). Mars, naked but for helmet and Chlamys, advancing rightwards. In right arm spear, in left arm (at back) a trophy (looking like a warhammer).
By this time Mars was seen as ancestor of the Romans and founding father of the Urbs (= Rome). Minted in Rome.
