Bronze Quadrans - Æ 16-17 mm - 4 gr - Die axis 06:00 - RIC 694 p293, RCV 3246 p117.
1. IMP CAES N[E]RVA TRAIA[N] AVG (Imperator Caesar Nerva Trajanus Augustus).
Trajan, head right, laureate, slight drapery on left shoulder.
2. - No Legend -
(She-)wolf walking left, head bowed low, defensive (?) position.
2.b S[C] (Senatus Consulto - By decree of the Senate)
About the wolf not much is known of the reason (s)he stands like this. (S)he is either growling and in an aggressive & defensive position or showing submissiveness by bowing to whomever. Is it the wolf that fed Romulus and Remulus ? We cannot quite distinguish that it is feeding female. And finally : maybe everybody said this is a wolf, but are we sure ?
Oh and p.s. : to make matters worse : AD 98 is 850 years after the founding of Rome ...
