1. Front 2. Back
Silver Denarius - Æ 20-22 mm - 5 grams - Die axis 01:00 - RIC 80.
1. IMP C C VIB TREB GALLVS PF AVG (Imperator Caesar Caius Vibius Trebonianus Gallus Pius Felix Augustus). Radiate bust of draped and cuirassed emperor, facing right. Possibly an officina mark under the bust.
2. AEQVITAS AVG (Aequitas Augustus - (Financial) Justice of the Augustus).
Aequitas, in Stola, standing full front facing left, legs slightly bent. In her right arm the scales of Justice, in her left arm Cornucopia. IIV under her. She represents here equitable financial dealings, not really justice as such. The scales represent more those used by a money-changer than the scales of justice as we perceive it. The cornucopia stressing the result of it all.
Trebbie had not much time to get to fair dealings and its beneficent results … Minted in Antioch, which used a complex set of officina marks dots or numbers under the bust and the reverse type who were not always matching. In this case IIV stands for Officina 7.
