Bronze Æ 3 - Æ 18 mm - 4 grams - Die axis 11:00 - RIC IX (Thessalonica) 18(a) - Struck AD 364-367.
1. DN VALENTINi-ANVS PF AVG (Dominus Noster Valentinianus Pius Felix Augustus - Our Lord V. the Pious and Blessed Augustus). Emperor facing right, draped & cuirassed, single pearly diademed.
2. SECVRITAS - REIPVBLICAE (Securitas Rei Publicae - Security of the State).
Securitas, draped, winged, advancing leftwards holding laurel wreath in right and palm frond in left hand.
2.b ‘TESA’, TES = Thessalonica (Salonika, Greece); Alpha = 1st Officina).
Though reverse legend calls her Securitas it is in fact Victoria advancing. The hint to the wide public is that the security of the empire (and hence the common man) has come through the victories of the emperors !
