Valerianus I
Publius Licinius Valerianus
(AD 195 - 253 - 260)

Valerianus I Restitut Orientis
1. Front 2. Back
Silver(-ed ?) Antoninianus - Æ 21 mm - 4 grams - Die axis 11:00 - RIC 287c - Struck AD 255-256.
1. IMP C P LIC VALERIANVS PF AVG (Imperator Caesar Publius Licinius Valerianus Pius Felix Augustus - Emperor Caesar P.L.V. the Pious and Blessed Augustus). Emperor facing right, radiate, draped and cuirassed.
2. RESTITVT ORIE-NTIS (Restitut Orientis - Restorer of the Orient). Orientis (left), draped, wearing turreted crown or ritual headdress, presenting wreath to cuirassed Valerian (right) full front, facing left, with staff in left arm. Above them again a wreath with a dot inside it (makers mark).
Seller claimed it to be from Antioch. These days it is thought that there was a second mint in the middle east churning out coins, though where is as yet unknown. This coin is in all probability from that second (bigger) mint and not Antioch.
"By your actions in the east, you have rescued and saved us" (Old related inscription).
