Phillips V de Bourbon (19.12.1683 - 01.11.1700 - 09.07.1746) had to cede Brabant (a large province now divided between Belgium and Holland) after the
battle of Ramillies (23.05.1706). But kept coining during 1709 & 1710 in Namur all types
of coins with all types of legend’s still laying claim to the title of ‘Duke of Brabant’.
Phillips V was the 2nd son of Louis (the Dauphin) and Marie-anne of Bavaria, thereby
being a grandson of Louis XIV and a brother of the Duc’s de Bourgogne and De Berry. A.o. he
was also the Duc d’Anjou.
At the death of Charles II of Spain in 1700 he became King of Spain by testament. He then
needed 13 years to conquer his kingdom in a struggle with Charles VI of Austria. In the battle
of Ramillies he lost the Southern Netherlands to the Austrian Hapsburgers.
Phillips V proved to be the founder of the (still ruling) Spanish Royal house. Upon
acceptance of the Spanish crown he had to cede his claims on the French crown. To be
confirmed in his new role at the Peace of Utrecht (NL) in 1713. |
