This is a bit of a story. In the Netherlands nothing much Roman can be seen
except in museums. Everything our dear archeologers know is being left in the
ground on basis of the idea 'later on our technology will be even more advanced
so we will be able to earn more even then'. But since the Netherlands are just
too full everything is built over and the only thing left is doing rush
archeology jobs so instead of gaining we loose a lot of valuable material and
data .
One of the castelli was the nowadays Alphen aan den Rijn. In the city centre some large building wells were drilled and the earth dug up perfunctionarily scanned and then dumped at an area meant for industrial expansion. Soon ofcourse detectorists were there thicker than flies. A sword, daggers, shards, tiles, playing stones, nails in all sizes etc. etc. were found in droves. On one of the first days of April 2005 I went to this area with a good friend of mine and in a blazing sun (20+ degrees Celsius) accompanied by both of our sons. The kids had a great time digging up bones. The 'grown ups' had a great time digging up everything else. |
